Línea C5 (Cercanías Renfe). Line12 (Metrosur). Line 521 (intercity buses from Madrid, Madrid - Móstoles)
The Cercanías de Móstoles-El Soto station will serve as a reference point for the beginning of the route. Once outside the station, we will turn right to access the Camino del Obispo.
We will cross the road skirting the shopping center that we have on the left and we will turn to the right to cross the bridge that crosses the Southwest Highway (A-5). Once past the bridge, we will continue along the Camino del Obispo, leaving the water treatment plant on our left. A few meters further on, we will leave the paved road to start the compacted dirt road, where a wooden railing unequivocally marks the beginning of our route.
If accessed from the town of Móstoles, a good reference will be to start from the fantastic Finca Liana Park, from where a bike path leads to the El Soto Park. From there, there is also signage to the greenway, therefore, you will not get lost!
As we proceed quietly we can contemplate to the right the landscape that the cultivation fields show us and to the left, the great park of El Soto, an oasis of greenery in the big city where it is very pleasant to walk around its lake. This is another good starting point since the greenway is signposted from the park.
Km 3
The route runs easily unimpeded parallel to the highway (also called Calle Ferrocarril) that leads to the Guadarrama neighborhood, revealing the Parque Coimbra urbanization now linked to the greenway with a brand new wooden walkway that crosses the El Soto.
This stream gives rise to the El Soto Paleontological Zone, a Site of Cultural Interest in the Community of Madrid, in which fossils dating from approximately the Middle Aragonese, fifteen million years ago, have been found, such as giant tortoises and proboscis similar to the current elephants.
Km 5
Our route is getting closer to the end, watch out for the crossing in the colony of the Guadarrama river! When we access the magnificent Iron Bridge, a metal structure erected in the 19th century so that the old Madrid-Almorox (Toledo) railway line crossed the Guadarrama river bed.
This route allow us to easily enter the Parque Regional del Curso Medio del río Guadarrama. What better than to cross the Madrid river thanks to this latticework, the most emblematic element of the greenway and the finishing touch of the excursion.
Our path ends here - not without first passing through an unequivocal railway trench whose walls in spring are filled with flowers - but, if we want to continue a few more meters, once past the bridge we will be able to observe the old Río Guadarrama station, another of the tracks that recall the old train line, currently set up as the Greenway.
From here to Navalcarnero, the old railway has not been recovered as a greenway, so it will be necessary to continue on rural roads without signaling. In this attractive town we can also link to stage 15 of the Gran Tour of CiclaMadrid, a great 420-kilometer cycling route that surrounds the Community of Madrid in 17 stages.
The Madrid-Almorox railway line was created to meet the demands of transporting people and goods and meet the leisure needs offered by the southwestern area of Madrid.
The railway line, 74 kilometers long, was inaugurated on July 15, 1891. The train, which left Madrid's Goya station, named in this way for being located close to the properties of the Aragonese painter known as "La Quinta del Sordo", carried out its journey with stops at the stations of Campamento, Cuatro Vientos, Alcorcón, Móstoles, Guadarrama, Navalcarnero, Villa del Prado and, finally, Almorox. The wagons, which transported many people from Madrid who were going to bathe in the Alberche river, the so-called "Madrid beach", were loaded with construction material for the construction of the swamps near the Alberche river, while on their way to the capital, the trains transported wine, fruits, cereals, vegetables and flour.
The itinerary, which lasted approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes, passed slowly between pine trees, olive trees, and holm oaks, although the hubbub and laughter of the people, given the low speed of the train, around 20 km/h, made the trip an unforgettable ride. for those who were going to enjoy the day.
With the passage of time, the transport of goods reduced and, although the traffic of people maintained, the investments of material for its maintenance were paralyzed. In December 1965 the route was limited to Navalcarnero and, finally, on July 1, 1970, the railway line was closed.
Thus, the modest narrow-gauge train gave way, in part, to the current C5 Cercanías line between Atocha and Móstoles-El Soto.
