You are about to start this cycling or hiking adventure along the Chicharra Greenway as it passes through the Murcian town of Cieza. A 13.7 km route along the old railway line known as "Chicharra" that used to run between Cieza and Alcoy.
It is worth mentioning that one of the main attractions of this route is the spectacle of the "Cieza blossoming", a very special event in February and March when the flowers of the different varieties of peach reach their full bloom. A visual chromatic play of the peach fields of the Ricote Valley that gives the route an undeniable touristic value that reminds and has little to envy to the "sakura" of the famous Japanese landscapes. Without further ado, we start the route.
From the old Cieza railway station, and for approximately 6 kilometres until reaching the starting point located at kilometre 0 of the Greenway, a cycling route has been signposted, with the aim of avoiding junctions with roads with high traffic density, such as the A-30 and the RM-B19.
The start of the Chicharra Greenway is located to the north of the town of Cieza, specifically in the "Los Prados" industrial estate. From the reception area of the same name, there is a cycle lane which, after one kilometre, joins the old railway line.
If at the beginning of the route we feel like relaxing before pedalling or walking, there is a rest area with tables where we can take a break along the way and enjoy the local products of Murcia's gastronomy.
After about 2 km from the start of the greenway we come to an impressive 40m long metal footbridge that rests on the abutments of an old railway bridge.
Once we have reached this point, we can enjoy a viewpoint and contemplate the fascinating landscape that unfolds before our eyes. If we raise our eyes to the right we will see an expanse of arid land and we will find the Judío Reservoir.
During the next 4 kilometres, advancing almost parallel to the Murcia Motorway (A-30), we reach a second viewpoint and a new rest area called "El Felipe". In this enclave, if desired, visitors have the opportunity to shelter from the sun under the shade of a singular tree "Olivo del Argaz", relevant in the Region of Murcia.
About 9.6 kilometres from the start of the route, at the junction with the RM-714 road (Venta del Olivo-Jumilla), is the old Las Lomas halt, where a reception area has been set up for visitors. At this kilometre point there is an opportunity to discover the "El Picarcho" ecotourism route, which runs through the mountain ranges of the same name.
The Greenway ends after 13.7 kilometres in the area known as the Casa del Manchego, where there is a rest area.
At this point, the Camino de la Vera Cruz de Caravaca begins, an itinerary that runs along the shady side of the Sierra Larga mountain range.
It isworth mentioning that there is the possibility of connecting with the Yecla section, an additional sustainable experience of another 8.9 km. Are you up for it?
Of interest:
There is a new 55-kilometre ecotourism itinerary that starts at the old railway station in Yecla, passes through Jumilla and the monastery of Santa Ana and connects with the Chicharra Greenway (Cieza section), along which it would continue to the city of Cieza.
This itinerary runs along rural, dirt or asphalted roads, with minimal road traffic. Thus, with this connection, a 78-kilometre long cycle-pedestrian route is achieved, including almost 9 kilometres of the Chicharra Greenway (Yecla section) and 14 kilometres of the Chicharra Greenway (Cieza section). And as if that were not enough, this route forms part of the 'Camino de la Vera Cruz' pilgrimage route from Navarre to Caravaca de la Cruz.
